Liverpool European Win Sets Up All Premiership Semi
8th April 2008

By Staff Writer

Another wonderful European night at Anfield saw Steven Gerrard score the winning goal in front of an ecstatic Kop against a fluid Arsenal side seemingly capable of winning the tie and salvaging their season.

Abou Diaby had put Arsenal in front early on, following a wonderful passing move, when the pace of his shot beat Reina at his near post. With these two teams attacking hard it never looked that this scoreline would hold, and so it proved when Hyypia powered a header in off Almunia's goalpost.

Both sides had some sustained periods of pressure but eventually Torres put Liverpool in front with a cracking goal, turning in the box and volleying past Almunia to make it 2-1.

Following that goal, there was some wonderfully commited play from both sides ,without anything unecessary going on, which is what you would hope and expect from an all English tie.

Arsenal fans must have thought they had won the tie in the 84th minute when Walcott was allowed to run through on goal by a nervous Liverpool defence and finding himself able to cross to three Arsenal players in the box. Adebeyor got his foot on the ball and a 2-2 was assured from that distance.

Practically from the restart however, Babel was brought down in the box by Toure and Gerrard converted the penalty with all the coolness you would expect from him even, under that kind of pressure making it 3-2.

Even so there was another five minutes to play and Arsenal kept attacking but, as Walcott had done for Arsenal, substitute Babel kept pushing for Liverpool and eventually got his goal on the break clinching the tie 4-2 in the 93rd minute.

It was a fantastic game to watch for the neutral, but Arsenal fans must wonder where the season has gone following this defeat. Liverpool however will have been expecting this result to set them up with another semi-final meeting with Chelsea who beat Fenerbahce 2-0 at home to make it through.
